Already in 1985, Celtic Frost used operatic female vocals on some songs from the To Mega Therion album. Paradise Lost also featured female operatic vocals on their first album, Lost Paradise. The Gathering also included female vocals on their debut album Always... with Marike Groot accompanying Bart Smits. The following year saw the release of Almost a Dance with Nils Duffhues on lead vocals and Martina van Loon on female vocals. With 1995's Mandylion, they discontinued the use of male vocals, replacing them entirely with vocals by Anneke van Giersbergen. At the same time, the vocalist Anne Nurmi appeared in the Lacrimosa project, where previously only the vocalist Tilo Wolf sang, and the characteristic gothic-metal heaviness appeared in the music, starting from the Inferno album..
